Sometimes it’s all about being in the right mindset. not having a plan. surrendering control. believing in Serendipity. allowing something to find YOU. In this case, we’re talking about COLOR.. and when to be inspired. But it has nothing to do with the time of day, or appointments, or schedules.
It has everything to do with when you will be most open to be inspired, to let it happen, to get out of the way.
Zen your When for Color Inspiration
Color inspiration can come from anywhere, anyplace, or anything. But not everyone can envision a color on their walls that they’ve seen in a completely different setting.. which means they won’t think of that color as a possible option to use as a decorating element. So that’s why I’d like to inspire you to think differently about all the ways you can be inspired by color … to find your next color inspiration in an unexpected way. . . . for the simple joy of the discovery, like finding a treasure chest filled with beautiful gems of color in places you wouldn’t normally look.
And maybe you’ll even find something out about yourself (color-wise, decorating-wise)
that you didn’t know..or that you were unknowingly blocking out (not letting yourself know)
or not giving yourself permission to explore [other colors] … and to really see that color as a paint swatch.. as a potential .. as an unexpected path to bring colors into your home that you wouldn’t have considered before, because you weren’t sure how, or where, or in/on what.
WHEN and WHERE IS THE BEST PLACE TO GET COLOR INSPIRATION?
Here’s the WHEN:
WHEN there’s no agenda or preconceived list of what color you should be looking for
WHEN you’re not consciously looking
WHEN the color grabs your attention:
- makes you stop in your tracks
- instills that undeniable (positive) ‘gut feel’
- it speaks to you
- it hits your vibe
- it’s a no-brainer
- it’s undeniable
- there’s just something about it
- It needs to be in your life somewhere, somehow, in someway
But what if it doesn’t ‘go with anything’ or you’re not sure what you’d use it for, or in, or on? We’re not gonna focus on that right now. The goal is to be aware of a color connection.. colors you love, for any reason.
Many times we don’t want to gamble with trying a totally different color scheme.. it can be scary. But that keeps us stuck: within the comfort of what we’ve always chosen, in that color family we feel loyal to, or with the colors that we think other people define us by.
And while there’s nothing wrong with that, if that’s where your comfort lies and you don’t want to go out of your comfort zone, but then you’re also not knowing what you’re missing, the old, “you don’t know what you don’t know”. Not sure who started that saying.. it’s kind of redundant in a redundant–kind-of-way ; )
But it’s fun to think that you could have a new favorite color out there and you don’t even know it. Does it make you curious?
As for the WHERE .. let’s first get in the right mindset.. take some deep breaths,
clear your mind, AND:
Rid yourself of any preconceived notions of:
- the colors you think you want
- the colors you think you should choose
- the colors you feel safe with
- the colors that are popular right now
- Pretend you have a blank canvas where nothing will limit your color choices.
- THEN, think ‘natural’ and ‘organic’ colors
AND THEN GET OUTSIDE .. and LOOK at those colors as though their Mother Nature’s Color Deck .. just waiting for you to choose: that certain hue, or saturation level, or color value .. how it can become a color palette for your home. And this is so easy to do now with all the great color matching apps available to us. ANY color outside can be a color inside.. and a color that you can ‘see’ on your walls before you even lift a paint brush.
